Beach Hazards Statement Issued: Sneaker Wave Risk on South Central Oregon Coast
A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for the South Central Oregon Coast, including Douglas, Coos, and Curry counties, warning of a moderate risk of dangerous sneaker waves from late Saturday night through Monday afternoon, with highest risk Sunday morning. Avoid rocks, jetties, and the ocean during this time.
Residents and visitors to the South Central Oregon Coast, specifically the beaches of Douglas, Coos, and Curry counties, are advised to exercise extreme caution due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Medford, OR.
A moderate risk for dangerous sneaker waves is expected from late Saturday night, October 9, through Monday afternoon, October 11. The NWS indicates that the risk will be highest during Sunday morning. This condition is due to short period north-northwest wind waves interacting with a building west-northwest long period swell.
Sneaker waves can run up significantly farther on beaches than normal, including over rocks and jetties. These unpredictable waves can suddenly knock individuals off their feet and sweep them into the ocean. The NWS also warns that waves can move logs or other objects, posing a risk of crushing or trapping anyone caught underneath.
To ensure safety, the NWS instructs everyone to avoid climbing on rocks and jetties. Stay away from the ocean and remain out of the water during this period to avoid hazardous conditions. The Beach Hazards Statement is effective from October 9 at 2:34 PM PDT until October 12 at 2:00 PM PDT.
