Sneaker Wave Risk: South Central Oregon Coast
A Beach Hazards Statement for a moderate risk of sneaker waves is in effect for the South Central Oregon Coast, including Curry, Douglas, and Coos counties, from October 11 at 8:15 PM PDT until October 12 at 2:00 PM PDT; residents are advised to stay away from the ocean, rocks, and jetties.
Residents and visitors on the South Central Oregon Coast, including the Curry County Coast, are urged to avoid rocks and jetties, and stay out of the ocean due to a Beach Hazards Statement. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Medford, OR, has issued this warning for a moderate risk of sneaker waves.
The Beach Hazards Statement is in effect now, October 11 at 8:15 PM PDT, and will expire on October 12 at 2:00 PM PDT. This alert impacts the beaches of Douglas, Coos, and Curry counties.
The NWS reports that short period north-northwest wind waves will combine with a building west-northwest long period swell, creating dangerous conditions. Sneaker waves can run significantly farther up beaches than normal, sweeping individuals off their feet and into the ocean. These powerful waves can also move logs or other debris, posing a risk of crushing or trapping anyone in their path.
For your safety, remain out of the water and avoid coastal structures like rocks and jetties during this period. You can view the hazard area in detail at https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/map/?wfo=mfr.
