Beach Hazards Statement Issued: Avoid Oregon Coast Due to Sneaker Wave Risk
A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for the South Central Oregon Coast, including Curry County, from early this morning, October 11, through Monday afternoon, October 12, due to a moderate risk of dangerous sneaker waves.
Coastal residents and visitors are advised to avoid beaches, rocks, and jetties along the South Central Oregon Coast, including Curry County, due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Medford, OR. This statement is in effect from early this morning, October 11, through Monday afternoon, October 12.
The NWS reports a moderate risk for sneaker waves, which can run significantly farther up beaches than normal and over rocks and jetties. These waves pose a danger of knocking individuals off their feet and sweeping them into the ocean. Additionally, sneaker waves can move logs and other debris, creating a risk of crushing or trapping anyone caught underneath.
The affected areas include the beaches of Douglas, Coos, and Curry counties. This hazard is attributed to short period north-northwest wind waves interacting with a building west-northwest long period swell.
To ensure safety, the NWS instructs everyone to remain out of the water and away from the ocean. Do not climb on rocks or jetties during this period. For detailed information on the hazard area, visit https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/map/?wfo=mfr.
