Residents in Putnam and White counties are advised to seek shelter indoors as a strong thunderstorm approaches. The National Weather Service in Nashville has issued a Special Weather Statement, effective immediately until 9:00 PM CDT.

At 8:10 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated a strong thunderstorm located over Baxter, approximately 9 miles west of Cookeville. This storm is moving east at 15 mph.

The primary hazards associated with this storm include wind gusts up to 40 mph and half-inch hail. The National Weather Service warns that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is also possible.

Areas expected to be impacted include Cookeville, Baxter, Burgess Falls State Park, and Hamptons Crossroads. This also includes Interstate 40 between mile markers 271 and 289.

If you are outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a sturdy building until the storm passes. The Special Weather Statement is set to expire at 9:00 PM CDT tonight.
