A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Webster County, including Preston, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Peachtree City GA, effective immediately as of October 8 at 11:16 PM EDT. Residents should prepare for hazardous conditions as Tropical Storm force winds, heavy rainfall, and the potential for tornadoes are expected.

The NWS forecasts peak winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, but warns of a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage to property, including sheds and unanchored mobile homes, along with downed tree limbs and scattered power outages, are possible. Act now to complete all preparations before hazardous winds begin.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. This could lead to moderate flooding, causing significant impacts such as rapid inundation of low-lying areas and hazardous driving conditions. Heed all flood watches and warnings; evacuations and rescues are possible. Consider protective actions if you are in a flood-vulnerable area.

The situation is favorable for tornadoes, with the potential for several, some possibly intense. These could cause considerable damage, power loss, and communications failures. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued.

This Tropical Storm Watch is effective until October 9, 2026, at 3:30 AM EDT. For more information on family emergency plans, visit ready.gov/hurricanes. For local weather conditions, visit weather.gov/atlanta.
