Tropical Storm Warning for Baker County: Prepare for Severe Weather
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Baker County, including Newton, by the NWS Tallahassee, urging immediate preparation for severe wind, major flooding, and potential tornadoes within the next 36 hours.
BAKER COUNTY, GA – October 9, 2026 – The National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Baker County, effective immediately and expiring at 7:15 PM UTC today. Residents in Newton and surrounding areas should prepare for severe weather conditions within the next 36 hours.
Emergency plans should now be underway for potential wind, flooding, and tornado threats. Peak wind forecasts are 10-20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Act now to secure outdoor items as limited damage to property and power outages are possible. Hazardous driving conditions on bridges and elevated roadways are also expected.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with an additional 3-6 inches of rain expected, with locally higher amounts. This poses a major flooding rain threat, and emergency plans should include the potential for major flooding, evacuations, and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life.
The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense, having larger damage paths. Listen for tornado watches and warnings. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter before hazardous weather arrives.
