Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Baker County: Prepare for Severe Weather
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Baker County, including Newton, urging residents to prepare for potential severe winds, major flooding, and tornadoes today, October 9, 2026.
BAKER COUNTY, GA – October 9, 2026 – Residents in Baker County, particularly Newton, should immediately prepare for potential tropical storm conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL issued a Tropical Storm Watch at 8:28 AM EDT today, effective until 4:30 PM EDT.
The NWS forecasts peak winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with the potential for winds reaching 39 to 57 mph. Damage to unsecured structures, large tree limbs, and some power outages are possible. Efforts to protect property should now be underway, and all preparations must be completed before hazardous winds arrive.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 3-6 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts. This poses a potential for major flooding, which may lead to evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to take action could result in serious injury or loss of life. Emergency plans should include potential major flooding.
Furthermore, the NWS indicates a favorable situation for several tornadoes, some potentially intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if issued. Significant impacts, including widespread damage and power loss, are possible from tornadoes.
