Residents in Columbus, Tryon, Saluda, and surrounding areas of Polk Mountains and Eastern Polk are urged to seek immediate shelter as a thunderstorm with frequent lightning approaches. The National Weather Service (NWS) Greenville-Spartanburg SC issued a Special Weather Statement today, September 20, 2026, at 4:48 PM EDT, effective until 5:15 PM EDT.

Doppler radar indicates a thunderstorm with frequent lightning 5 miles northwest of Columbus, moving south at 15 mph. Locations to be impacted include Columbus, Tryon, Saluda, Mill Spring, and Lake Adger.

If you are outdoors, move indoors or into a hard-topped vehicle immediately. Stay away from open areas and isolated high objects like trees. Indoors, stay away from windows and doors and avoid using wired electronic devices. Do not take a shower or bath. Consider unplugging unnecessary appliances before the storm arrives.

Lake Adger is directly in the storm's path. Cloud-to-ground lightning and gusty winds will create dangerous boating conditions. All boaters on Lake Adger should move to shore immediately. This statement expires at 5:15 PM EDT.
