US Military Reports Two Additional Casualties Amid Regional Tensions

The United States military has reported two additional casualties, following the recent deaths of three soldiers in a drone attack in Jordan. One US service member died in Iraq from an injury not related to hostile action, the Department of Defense stated on Monday.

Separately, medical examiners identified human remains found in Jordan as another US service member. Authorities did not release the cause or circumstances of that individual's death.

These announcements come after an attack on a US base in Jordan on January 28 killed Sergeant William Jerome Rivers, Specialist Kennedy Ladon Sanders, and Specialist Breonna Alexsondria Davis. President Joe Biden attributed that attack to "radical Iran-backed militant groups" operating in Syria and Iraq. The US Central Command confirmed that Iran-backed militants launched a one-way attack drone at Tower 22, a logistics support base in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border.

The recent deaths bring the number of US military personnel who have died in the region since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel to three combat-related deaths and two non-combat-related deaths as of Monday, according to published reports. Iran has denied involvement in the drone attack, with a Foreign Ministry spokesman stating, "These claims are made with specific political goals to reverse the facts in the region." He added, "The Islamic Republic of Iran does not welcome the expansion of the conflict in the region."

On Sunday, former President Donald Trump commented on the deaths of the three soldiers, stating, "Those are great young people and what a sad thing, what a sad thing." He made the remarks during a campaign event. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin also issued a statement regarding the Jordan attack, saying, "I am outraged and deeply saddened by the death of three U.S. service members."

Retaliatory actions from the United States are anticipated. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby stated that the US response "could be a multiple-tiered approach, in other words, more than one action, and it could unfold over a period of time." On January 30, Biden stated he had decided on a response to the drone attack, but did not provide specifics.
