Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Choctaw County: Prepare for Hazardous Winds
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Choctaw County, including Butler, Lisman, and Silas, until October 10 at 6:15 AM CDT, with hazardous winds and moderate flooding rain expected. Move to safe shelter now.
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Choctaw County, effective immediately from the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL. The warning was issued on October 9 at 10:13 PM CDT and is set to expire on October 10 at 6:15 AM CDT. Communities specifically affected include Butler, Lisman, and Silas.
Residents should plan for hazardous winds of equivalent tropical storm force. Peak wind forecasts are between 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with the potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. All remaining efforts to protect property should be completed as soon as possible. Move to safe shelter before the wind becomes hazardous.
Potential impacts include limited damage to structures like porches, awnings, and sheds, with unanchored mobile homes at risk. Many large tree limbs may break, and some trees could be snapped or uprooted. Roads may become impassable due to debris, particularly in urban or heavily wooded areas, and hazardous driving conditions are expected on bridges and elevated roadways. Scattered power and communications outages are also possible.
In addition to wind, moderate flooding from heavy rain is a significant concern. Additional rainfall of around 1 inch is expected. Emergency plans should include the potential for evacuations and rescues. Consider protective actions if you are in a flood-vulnerable area and heed any flood watches and warnings. Failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life.
The NWS Mobile AL indicates that tornadoes are not expected at this time, though showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur.
