High Rip Current Risk and Surf Advisory for South Walton, Coastal Bay Counties
A High Rip Current Risk and High Surf Advisory has been issued for South Walton and Coastal Bay Counties, advising inexperienced swimmers to avoid the water through late Sunday night.
Inexperienced swimmers are advised to stay out of the water immediately due to a High Rip Current Risk and High Surf Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL. This advisory is in effect for South Walton and Coastal Bay Counties.
The High Surf Advisory, featuring large breaking waves of 3 to 7 feet in the surf zone, remains in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening, October 10. The High Rip Current Risk is expected to continue through late Sunday night, October 12, potentially creating dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore, capable of sweeping even strong swimmers into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises to relax and float, and not to swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Always swim near a lifeguard if possible.
