A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for South Walton, including Santa Rosa Beach, Sandestin, and Freeport, with life-threatening winds, storm surge, flooding rain, and potential tornadoes expected immediately. Shelter in place now.
SOUTH WALTON COUNTY, FL – The National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for South Walton, effective immediately. This warning, issued at 2:07 AM EDT on October 10, indicates that tropical storm-force winds are expected within the next 36 hours.
Residents in Santa Rosa Beach, Sandestin, and Freeport are urged to shelter from life-threatening winds with peak forecasts of 35-45 mph and gusts up to 60 mph. These winds are expected through the next few hours. The NWS advises planning for extreme wind equivalent to a Category 3 hurricane or higher. Last-minute efforts should focus solely on protecting life, as catastrophic wind damage remains a threat. Remain sheltered in the safest place possible.
Life-threatening storm surge of 2-4 feet above ground is possible around high tide. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete, and evacuees should be in safe shelters. Do not venture outside. A Flood Watch is in effect, with potential for major flooding from heavy rain, likely prompting evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings. The situation is also somewhat favorable for a few tornadoes; stay informed and move to the safest place within your shelter if a tornado warning is issued.
