High Rip Current Risk, High Surf, Coastal Flood Advisory for South Walton, Bay
South Walton and Coastal Bay Counties are under a High Rip Current Risk, High Surf Warning, and Coastal Flood Advisory, with officials urging everyone to stay out of the water due to dangerous conditions.
Residents and visitors in South Walton and Coastal Bay Counties are advised to stay out of the water due to a High Rip Current Risk and High Surf Warning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee, FL. A Coastal Flood Advisory is also in effect.
The High Rip Current Risk is in effect through late Sunday night, October 12, and means dangerous rip currents are expected. The High Surf Warning, with dangerously large breaking waves of 2 to 14 feet, is in effect until 10 AM CDT on Sunday. The Coastal Flood Advisory, predicting minor coastal flooding, is in effect until 11 AM CDT this morning, October 10.
The NWS warns that breaking waves can sweep people off jetties and docks into dangerous seas, and life-threatening swimming conditions are expected. Flooding of lots, parks, and roads is also anticipated, with isolated road closures possible.
If travel is necessary, allow extra time and do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Protect flood-prone property. Everyone should remain out of the water and stay off jetties, piers, and other waterside infrastructure due to these life-threatening conditions.
If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
