Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Chilton County
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Chilton County, including Clanton, with hazardous winds and moderate flooding expected from early Saturday morning through Saturday afternoon; residents should prepare now and heed all warnings.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Chilton County, including Clanton, effective immediately. The National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL, issued the alert today, October 9, at 4:08 AM CDT, and it remains active until 12:15 PM UTC today. Residents in affected areas should prepare for hazardous wind conditions and potential moderate flooding.
Peak winds are forecast to reach 40-50 mph with gusts up to 65 mph, expected from early Saturday morning through Saturday afternoon. Damage to property such as porches, awnings, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Large tree limbs may break, and some trees could be snapped or uprooted. Scattered power and communication outages are anticipated.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Total rainfall amounts are predicted to be 2-4 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. This could lead to moderate flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and small streams could overflow. Flooding in underpasses, low-lying areas, and poor drainage spots is likely, making driving hazardous. Road and bridge closures are possible.
Residents should complete all property protection efforts as soon as possible and move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life. Tornadoes are not expected, but gusty showers and thunderstorms may still occur.
