1893 Rock Creek Railway northern terminus and car barn
Published in the January 1893 issue of The Electrical World, this photo shows the northern terminus and car barn of the Rock Creek Railway in Montgomery County, Maryland, just months after operations on this northern extension began in September 1892. The view is northward up Connecticut Avenue, and shows the 150-foot-wide road, the catenary poles along the double-track streetcar line, and the car barn. Coquelin Run at Connecticut Avenue
This is a view, looking northwest, of Coquelin Run, a tributary of Rock Creek, as it emerges from the culvert that carries it eastward under Connecticut Avenue (MD 195) in unincorporated Chevy Chase, Maryland, United States. The road sign indicates Chevy Chase Lake Court, a road that takes its name from the artificial lake created by the damming of Coquelin Run in 1892 to supply water for the steam turbines of a coal-fired power plant for the Rock Creek Railway, an early streetcar line. Properties of the Chevy Chase Land Company
The dark-shaded areas indicate property in Washington, D.C., and suburban Maryland owned in 1897 by the Chevy Chase Land Company. Founded in 1890 by U.S. Rep. Francis Newlands, the firm created Connecticut Avenue and the Chevy Chase communities of Maryland and D.C. The map also shows the Rock Creek Railway, a streetcar line laid by the Company from the Dupont Circle area to the planned Maryland suburbs.
