Kent County Gets $6.2M for New Millington Wastewater Plant
Kent County will build a new wastewater treatment plant in Millington using $6.2 million in federal funding secured by U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen and Congressman Andy Harris.
The current plant, built in the 1960s, sits in a FEMA flood zone and has exceeded the useful life of its mechanical and electrical components. The new facility will be built on higher ground outside the floodplain, protecting it from the storm damage that has repeatedly disabled the existing plant.
The current plant processes 105,000 gallons per day. The new facility will handle 350,000 gallons daily, with capacity to expand to 700,000 gallons daily. The expanded capacity will enable development along the U.S. 301 and River Road intersection, Millington Mayor Kevin Hemstock said.
The new plant will meet Enhanced Nutrient Removal standards to protect the Chester River and Chesapeake Bay. The Rural Maryland Economic Development Fund supported feasibility and design work.
