Staff Writer
June 11, 2026

Kent County appointed Carla M. Gerber as Director of Planning, Housing, and Zoning on April 17. Gerber, a 25-year county employee, most recently served as Deputy Director of the department.

As Deputy Director for four years, Gerber oversaw daily operations, supervised staff, and advised County Commissioners and the public on policy matters. She modernized the county's data systems and public communication initiatives.

Earlier roles included GIS Specialist and Community Planner. Gerber supported comprehensive plan updates, maintained datasets for emergency services, administered the Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Program, and managed grant-funded projects including scenic byway initiatives.

Gerber holds a Master's degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Iowa, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Environmental Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a Bachelor's degree from Wake Forest University. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and a Certified Public Manager.

"Carla has proven her dedication to this county time and again," said County Commissioner Ron Fithian, Commission President. "Her experience, steady leadership, and commitment to serving our residents make her an excellent choice for Director."
