Cheboygan County Flood Permits Required for Erosion Repair

Staff Writer
May 14, 2026

Cheboygan County officials warned property owners to obtain permits before undertaking erosion control work near Black Lake and other waterfront areas affected by recent flooding.

Saturated soils have destabilized some shorelines. County officials said property owners must keep people, pets, and equipment away from eroding banks, even when documenting damage.

Earth disturbance of 225 square feet or more requires a Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control permit in waterfront areas, including those near the Cheboygan River and its tributaries. Waivers are available in some cases. Property owners should contact the Cheboygan County Department of Planning and Zoning at 231-627-8489 before starting work.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy also requires permits for grading, fill placement, riprap installation, or retaining wall construction. Contact the EGLE Gaylord Office at 989-731-4920 for permit inquiries.
