Cheboygan County Erosion Warning After Flooding

Staff Writer
May 14, 2026

CHEBOYGAN — Recent flooding has eroded shorelines and land around Black Lake and other areas of Cheboygan County. The County Planning and Zoning Department is urging property owners to keep people, pets, and equipment away from unstable or saturated soils and eroding banks.

Property owners planning earth disturbance of 225 square feet or more generally need a Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control permit in certain county areas. Waivers are available under specific circumstances.

Anyone planning work should contact the County Planning and Zoning Department at 231-627-8489 before starting. Staff can advise on permit requirements and waivers.

Erosion control and shoreline stabilization work, including grading, fill placement, riprap installation, and retaining wall construction, may also require permits from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. Contact the EGLE Gaylord Office at 989-731-4920 for details.
