The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office reported the drowning. West Manatee Fire Rescue crews located the man and began life-saving efforts. He was transported to a hospital where medical staff pronounced him dead. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident.
The waters around Passage Key, where the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay converge, are known for treacherous currents and rapid tide changes. Local boater Ernie Vanderwalt described the currents as extremely dangerous, with tides that shift quickly and rip currents that can surprise even experienced swimmers.
John Stump of West Manatee Fire Rescue emphasized the serious approach first responders take to all water emergencies. "In our line of business, one is too many," Stump said, highlighting the inherent risks of local waters.
Local authorities and water safety experts urge residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution when on or near the water, especially in areas like Passage Key. Before heading out, check tide charts. Maintain a constant watch on the water, even when it appears calm. Avoid swimming near inlets and sandbars, as these areas concentrate currents. When possible, swim at beaches with lifeguards present.
