John Bernard Mullane (“Bernie”), 92, of Naperville, IL passed away Friday, May 29, 2026, at Edward Hospital, Naperville, IL.John is preceded in death by his parents; Louis Cornelius Mullane and Margaret Maskill Mullane, his sister, Mary Catherine Kohl and many close, cherished family members. He kept their memories alive each day by sharing with others their stories and anecdotes. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 69 years, Josephine Margaret Durschmid Mullane, four children; Joseph (Shannon), Theresa Cremering (Jerry), Patricia Ricchiuto (late David), Timothy (Karen), grandchildren; Amie, Elise, Tony, Josephine, Mary Jean, great grandchildren; Keane, Wade, Lauren, Blake and William Desmond.John grew up in Oak Park, an area he loved, and was a graduate of Fenwick High School Class of 1951. He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and then the Reserves, serving throughout the Great Lakes region. John and Jo raised their family in Burbank and later Cicero, where they had moved to be closer to extended family. As empty nesters they moved to their “lake house” in Wauconda, a lifelong dream. There Dad loved to be in the water and played endlessly with the kids. John and Jo “retired” to Naperville to enjoy condo living and were members of the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic church. Last summer, he and “his bride” moved into a retirement community to settle in for their last chapter. No matter where they lived, John and Jo weathered the good and bad, hand in hand, making the best of things while enjoying laughter and time spent with family and friends.Anyone who knew John knew he always had a smile and a story. He could talk to anyone and loved making new friends. Nothing was dearer to his heart than family and he enjoyed sharing the latest updates with others. He was extremely proud of his military service, his Oak Park roots and was a devout Bears and Sox fan. His understanding of the game and ability to remember players and details was renowned. He was on the move often with daily walks around the neighborhood, often with stops at the local hardware and grocery store just to chat or tell a joke or two. When not walking or visiting, he was a consummate reader of books and the Chicago Trib and hooked on doing the daily Chicago Tribune crossword puzzles – in ink no less!A dedicated and conscientious worker, John was employed with People’s Gas, UPS, Clark Equipment in Burbank and the Wauconda Community Unit School District.Visitation will be Sunday, June 7, 2026, 2:00 to 6:00 pm, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S Mill St, Naperville, IL 60540. Funeral Mass will be Monday, June 8, 2026, 11:00 am, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 36 N Ellsworth St, Naperville, IL 60540. A chapel service will follow at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, 1400 S Wolf Rd, Hillside, IL 60162.
