Cook County Clerk Hosts Property After Death Workshop in Mokena

Join Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon, the Teamsters Joint Council 25 Women's Committee and the Clerk’s Office Staff for an informative discussion about Property After Death and how residents can avoid costly and time-consuming hurdles after their death or the death of a loved one. Representatives will also discuss the Clerk’s Property Fraud Alert System which allows homeowners to prevent fraud against their property. This is an in-person event. Money Orders | USPS Sending Money Orders When sending money by mail, use money orders as a safe alternative to cash and personal checks. U.S. Postal Service money orders are affordable, widely accepted, and never expire. Your money order receipt will help you track your payment and show proof of value in case the money order gets lost, stolen, or damaged. You can buy or cash postal money orders at any Post Office location. How to Send Domestic Money Orders - Decide on the money order amount. You can send up to $1,000 in a single order anywhere in the United States. - Go to any Post Office location. - Take cash or a debit card. You cannot pay with a credit card. - Fill out the money order at the counter with a retail associate. - Pay the dollar value of the money order plus the issuing fee. - Keep your receipt to track the money order. Money Order Fees Fees are based on the money order dollar amount: - $0.01 to $500.00: $2.65 - $500.01 to $1,000.00: $3.75 - Postal Military Money Orders (issued by military facilities): $0.85 Receiving Postal Money Orders – How to Spot a Fake Before you accept a money order, make sure it's real. Real postal money orders have specific marks and designs to prevent fraud. There are 4 valid designs. Red, Blue, & Red Postal Money Order (July 2025) This version has a red, blue, and red color pattern with subtle design features of an eagle head and an American flag, and a QR Code in the center that links to the Check Money Order Status tool. Security features are the same as the July 2025 version. Green & Purple Postal Money Order (Point-of-Sale Version) This version has a green and purple color pattern with a U.S. Mail 1970 eagle logo in the center. Security features include a U.S. Mail eagle 1970 logo in the center, watermarks of Ben Franklin on the left side repeating top to bottom, and a vertical multicolored security thread with the letters "USPS" weaving in and out of the paper. Green & Purple Postal Money Order (Paymaster Version) This version has a green and purple color pattern with a U.S. Mail 1970 eagle logo in the center. Security features include the same elements as the Point-of-Sale version. Suspect a Fake? Check the dollar amount: Domestic money orders cannot be more than $1,000. The words and numbers for the amount should match. Discoloration or paper fiber disturbance around the dollar amounts may show the amounts were changed. If you can easily see watermarks without holding them up to the light, it may mean fraud. If you think you've been given a fake money order: Verify the money order online by scanning the QR code, visiting tools.usps.com/money-orders.htm, or calling the Money Order Verification System at 1-866-459-7822. If you suspect fraud, contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) at 1-877-876-2455 or www.uspis.gov/report. How to Cash Domestic Money Orders Domestic money orders never expire and they do not accrue interest. Money orders are cashed for the exact amount on the order. You can cash a USPS money order at a Post Office for free. You can also cash them at most banks and some stores. Rural carriers may cash money orders if they have enough money on hand. Cashing a Money Order at the Post Office: - Do not sign the money order. - Take a primary photo ID with the money order to any Post Office location. - Sign the money order at the counter in front of a retail associate. Check the Status of a Money Order You can check the status of a money order you've purchased from the U.S. Postal Service at any time by visiting the Money Orders Application. Make sure you have the following information for the postal money order you want to check: serial number, Post Office number, and dollar amount. Replacing Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Money Orders Lost or Stolen Money Orders: - You cannot stop payment on postal money orders, but a lost or stolen money order can be replaced. - Money order loss or theft may take up to 30 days to confirm. - Investigating a money order's lost or stolen status may take up to 60 days. - There is a $23.00 processing fee to replace a lost or stolen money order. Requesting a Refund: - Take your money order receipt to any Post Office location. - Talk to a retail associate at the counter to start a Money Order Inquiry. - After starting the inquiry, you will be able to check the status of your money order and inquiry progress by visiting the Money Orders Application. - When your money order is confirmed lost or stolen, a replacement money order will be issued. Maximum dimensions are 11-1/2" long x 6-1/8" high. Standard No. 10 envelopes are 9-1/2" long x 4-1/8" high. Contents must stay flat—no more than 1/4" thick. Large envelopes (called flats) can be used for letter-sized papers without folding; postage starts at $1.69. Nonrectangular, rigid, or lumpy large envelopes require package pricing. Nonmachinable envelopes (rigid, lumpy, with clasps, string, or buttons) cost an additional $0.49. Square or vertical envelopes also incur extra charges. Learn about the insurance and extra services we offer: some are included for free, and others are available for a fee. Protect valuable shipments and get peace of mind with additional insurance, signature-required delivery, and other add-ons. Keep proof of when you mailed your items and know when your items are delivered safely to the correct recipient. In some cases, you can order or print the extra service forms you need online. EXTRA & INCLUDED INSURANCE Standard Shipping Insurance: You can purchase insurance coverage for your mailpieces for up to $5,000 in indemnity to protect against loss or damage. Insurance fees are based on the item's declared value. There are limitations for insuring some products and certain items. Mail insured for more than $500 may require the recipient to show an acceptable primary ID before USPS will deliver the mailpiece. The price is based on declared value, starting at $2.80. Priority Mail Express & Priority Mail: These services include up to $100 of insurance in the price. For more valuable shipments, additional coverage is usually available. USPS Ground Advantage

USPS Ground Advantage® service is an affordable and reliable way to send packages inside the U.S. Ship to all 50 states, U.S. military bases, territories, possessions, and Freely Associated States. Ground Advantage is the primary option for sending hazardous materials (HAZMAT) that can't go by air. Prices start at $7.90 at a Post Office™ location. Ship online with Click-N-Ship® and get lower Commercial Rates. Businesses can get additional savings by opting in to the Business Rate Card. Ground Advantage packages are delivered in 2-5 days and USPS Tracking® service is included in the price. The service is USPS's best-priced option for items up to 15.999 oz, based on weight (rounded up to 4 oz, 8 oz, 12 oz, and 15.999 oz) and zone (distance). Packages greater than 15.999 oz are charged by the pound up to 70 lbs (rounded up). Payment options include stamps, self-service kiosk, Click-N-Ship, or at a Post Office. The service includes forwarding, undeliverable as addressed (UAA), and return to sender (RTS) at no additional cost. USPS Label Delivery service allows customers to print labels online for an extra $1.65 per label. Free Package Pickup is available at home or office locations. $100 insurance is included for both outbound and return shipments, and customers can purchase up to $5,000 in additional coverage against loss or damage for merchandise. Ground Advantage is the primary option for sending hazardous materials (HAZMAT) that are only mailable using ground transportation. Weight, Size, and Shape Requirements: Flats (Large Envelopes) being treated as packages require Ground Advantage pricing if they are more than 15" long, 12" high, or 3/4" thick; rigid (cannot bend); or not uniformly thick (lumpy).
