Cherokee Tobacco announces plans to invest $14 million in Caswell County
PELHAM—The Caswell County Board of Commissioners is pleased to announce that a new business is locating in the county’s Pelham Business Park. Cherokee Tobacco Company plans to invest $14 million to build a 65,000-square-foot manufacturing and distribution facility in Caswell, as well as create 39 new jobs. According to the Department of Commerce website, “Cherokee Tobacco Company is a family-owned business that has manufactured and sold its own brand of cigarettes, cigars, and pipe products for more than two decades. Cherokee is a sister company of JEB International, a tobacco processing company that serves the industry throughout the global market. The new build-to-suit facility will provide a clean manufacturing space to add new, next-generation product lines. The company will consolidate their existing operations, along with JEB International, into one 65,000-square-foot location in Pelham.” “We are thrilled to have this industry locating in our county and bringing jobs for our residents. Cherokee Tobacco Company is building on a long tradition of tobacco as an important driver for Caswell’s economy,” said Board of Commissioners Chairman Tim Yarborough. According to the NC Department of Commerce, the annual average wage will be $65,154, which is significantly higher than county’s current average wage of $43,046. The new jobs could have a potential annual payroll of $2.5 million. The Caswell Board of Commissioners unanimously approved awarding the bid for the sale of property to the developer during its December 16, 2024 meeting. The developer will pay $100,000 for 12.5 acres in the business park. This project will be across the street from Piedmont Community College’s Center for Educational and Agricultural Development (CEAD) is located. According to PCC President Dr. Pamela Senegal, whose team has worked with Cherokee Tobacco for the last year, CEAD's proximity was a major factor in the site choice.

Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards Governor’s Volunteer Service Award The Governor’s Volunteer Service Award honors the true spirit of volunteerism by recognizing individuals and groups that make a significant contribution to their community through volunteer service. An individual or group from the public, nonprofit, and private sectors may be nominated for this recognition award by a community member to their county-designated coordinator. There are categories for the type of nominee (individual, group, national service, and director of volunteers). Additional categories are based on the area of service (veteran, youth, seniors, education, animals, etc.). The Commission will review county nominations, and awards are given out locally by the designated county award coordinator. Meet Our 2026 Recipients Governor's Medallion Award for Volunteer Service The Governor’s Medallion Award for Volunteer Service was implemented in 2006 to recognize the top 20-25 volunteers in the state. Medallion recipients are nominated at the county level by the county award coordinator. Only one Medallion nomination is permitted per county. A statewide panel reviews and evaluates all these nominations to determine the award recipients. Medallion Award recipients are honored at an annual recognition ceremony. The medallion is placed around the neck to signify the volunteer's great service to the community. Governor’s Page Program
Founded in 1973, the Governor’s Page Program gives North Carolina high school students the opportunity for hands-on participation in state government. Hosted by VolunteerNC in Raleigh, pages will grow in four areas: history, civics, service, and professional development. Criteria Eligible participants are high school students or recent high school graduates in good academic standing. (Seniors may apply to participate the summer before attending college). College students are not eligible for the program. How to apply Deadline: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until all spots are filled. Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Complete the online application. Send the online recommendation form to two individuals.A non-relative school staff or faculty member (unless homeschooled) A non-relative adult who can speak to your suitability for the program *Applications are considered incomplete and will not be processed without the two recommendations. Activities During the page week activities may include the following: Develop a policy proposal with policy officials from various state government departments Learn from government officials about state government Plan their service project Complete tasks for State Government Departments Tour government buildings and historic sites Service Project Governor's pages must complete a service project and will spend part of their page week planning a service project that reflects the goals and values of VolunteerNC. The purpose of the project is to engage youth in service and demonstrate the direct effects it can have on North Carolina communities. Schedule A page week is four days. Typically, a page week runs Monday (1-4 pm) and Tuesday to Thursday (9 am-4 pm). The work location is the Albemarle building at 325 N Salisbury St Raleigh, NC. Dress Code Pages are expected to dress in business attire. Pages should wear comfortable shoes as the program requires walking. Stipend Pages will receive a stipend of $200.00 per week to offset the costs of expenses incurred due to travel and/or lodging. Accommodations Once accepted to the program, it is the responsibility of the page and their guardians to make arrangements for accommodations, including meals, prior to coming to Raleigh. Host Families A limited number of Host families are available for pages. These families, vetted by our office, have agreed to provide pages with daily meals and transportation to and from the office. All pages and their families are responsible for making and canceling arrangements with Host families. Pages are responsible for paying the $100 fee to the Host family prior to their stay.
