Cape Coral Police Issue 96 Citations in Distracted Driving Crackdown
Cape Coral Police issued 96 citations during a six-hour distracted driving enforcement operation on May 15, targeting a leading cause of traffic crashes in the city.
Officers conducted 100 traffic stops between 6 a.m. and noon. The operation yielded 36 distracted driving citations, 48 speeding tickets, 13 citations for traffic control violations, and six seatbelt citations. Police made three arrests on criminal charges and issued 21 warnings.
The Florida Department of Transportation funded the operation through a sub-grant. Cape Coral ranks fourth among 38 agencies statewide in distracted driving-related traffic fatalities and serious injuries, according to the Highway Safety Matrix.
The police department partnered with FDOT's Traffic Safety Office to conduct additional saturation patrols and education programs. The grant funding allows officers to focus on traffic enforcement without reducing regular patrol coverage.
Cape Coral Police plans additional enforcement operations throughout the year.
