Cape Coral crews began a new program this week to improve roadside swales, vital drainage channels designed to manage stormwater and reduce flooding.
The Swale Grading Program aims to restore the swales' original shape and function, which can degrade over time due to sediment buildup, erosion or past modifications. This degradation impedes stormwater flow, causing water to pool in streets and yards.
The program also supports the city's environmental compliance, ensuring it meets water quality requirements for its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit. This helps protect local waterways, including those flowing toward the Caloosahatchee River.
The city has not released a schedule for which neighborhoods will be addressed first. Residents with persistent drainage issues can report them to the public works department for consideration in future program phases.
