Strong Thunderstorm with 55 MPH Winds Headed Towards Amarillo, Palo Duro Canyon
A Special Weather Statement has been issued for Potter, Carson, Randall, and Armstrong counties, including Palo Duro Canyon, warning of a strong thunderstorm with wind gusts up to 55 mph and potential localized flooding, effective until 10:00 PM CDT; seek shelter indoors if outside and avoid driving through flooded roads.
AMARILLO, TX – A Special Weather Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Amarillo, Texas, for Potter, Carson, Randall, and Armstrong counties, including Palo Duro Canyon. This statement is effective immediately and expires at 10:00 PM CDT.
At 9:25 PM CDT, NWS radar indicated a strong thunderstorm located 7 miles northwest of Washburn, or 11 miles east of Amarillo, moving north at 30 mph. The primary hazard associated with this storm is wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph. These strong winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.
Locations impacted include Amarillo, Lake Tanglewood, Washburn, Palo Duro Canyon, and Pantex. This also includes Interstate 40 between mile markers 73 and 94.
If you are outdoors, the NWS advises seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, which may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
