A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Mitchell County, including Camilla and Pelham, by the NWS Tallahassee, warning of potential tropical storm-force winds, moderate flooding, and several tornadoes within the next 48 hours. Residents should prepare immediately.
MITCHELL COUNTY, GA – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Mitchell County, including Camilla and Pelham, effective immediately by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee, FL. This watch means tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours. The watch is active until October 8, 2026, at 7:15 PM UTC.
Residents should act now to complete preparations before winds become hazardous. Peak wind gusts of up to 40 mph are forecast, with potential for scattered power and communication outages, and damage to lightweight structures. Expect many large tree limbs to break and some trees to snap or uproot. Roads may become impassable due to debris, particularly in urban or heavily wooded areas.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Emergency plans should include the potential for moderate flooding from heavy rain, with 1-3 inches of rainfall expected, and locally higher amounts. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and small streams could overflow. Floodwaters may enter some structures, and driving conditions will become hazardous with possible road and bridge closures.
The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if one is issued. Tornadoes can cause significant damage, power loss, and communications failures.
