Elevated Wildfire Risk Across U.P. This Weekend Due to Gusty Winds

A Special Weather Statement warns of elevated wildfire potential across most of the Upper Peninsula this weekend due to gusty winds, dry conditions, and warm temperatures; obey burn restrictions and report fires to 911.

Residents across the Upper Peninsula are advised to obey all local burn restrictions this weekend due to an elevated wildfire potential. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Marquette has issued a Special Weather Statement effective immediately, October 9, 2026, at 2:49 PM EDT, and expiring tomorrow, October 10, 2026, at 5:00 PM EDT.

The affected areas include Keweenaw, Houghton, Baraga, Marquette, Alger, Luce, Iron, Dickinson, Menominee, Delta, Southern Schoolcraft, Southern Houghton, Northern Schoolcraft, Western Chippewa, Central Chippewa, Southeast Chippewa, Western Mackinac, and Eastern Mackinac counties.

Gusty southerly winds, potentially reaching speeds as high as 30 mph, combined with dry and warm conditions and minimal recent rainfall, are contributing to this elevated risk. Burn restrictions remain in effect across the region.

Immediately report any wildfires to local emergency services by calling 911. For complete details on burn permits and restrictions, visit www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits or call 866-922-2876.
