Residents in parts of central and western Upper Michigan must take immediate steps to protect tender plants and outdoor plumbing due to a Freeze Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Marquette MI. The warning is in effect until 10:00 AM EDT (9:00 AM CDT) today, October 3, 2026.

Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 24 degrees Fahrenheit are expected. These conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation, and potentially damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

The affected areas include Ontonagon, Houghton, Baraga, Marquette, Alger, Luce, Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson, Menominee, Delta, Southern Schoolcraft, Southern Houghton, and Northern Schoolcraft counties.

To prevent damage, the NWS advises wrapping or draining water pipes, or allowing them to drip slowly. For those with in-ground sprinkler systems, drain them and cover any above-ground pipes to protect against freezing.
