NC State Ant Control Study Launches at Wendell Park

Staff Writer
June 11, 2026

NC State entomologist Dr. Chris Hayes and his team launched Project Antenna in mid-March to control a red mound ant infestation at Wendell Park.

The researchers installed bait and pitfall stations throughout the park's trail system and around buildings to test mitigation methods for Formica integra. The town called in the university after ant colonies reached levels that created a public nuisance.

The project aims to reduce the population to manageable levels rather than eliminate the species entirely. Hayes and town officials noted that the ants provide ecological benefits worth preserving.

The research precedes major construction at the park. The trail system will close in late spring and summer 2026 for phase one of the Buffalo Creek Greenway.

The Town of Wendell posted project details and information about red mound ants on its website. Contact [email protected] with questions.
