Rip Current Statement Issued for Kenedy, Willacy, and Cameron Islands
A Rip Current Statement is in effect for Kenedy, Willacy, and Cameron Islands, with dangerous rip currents, coastal flooding, and high surf expected through the weekend. Inexperienced swimmers should avoid the water, and drivers should exercise caution near coastal areas.
Residents and visitors to Kenedy Island, Willacy Island, and Cameron Island are advised of a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service in Brownsville, TX, effective immediately until Sunday morning. This statement also includes a Coastal Flood Advisory until 7 AM CDT Monday and a High Surf Advisory until 7 PM CDT this evening.
Dangerous rip currents are expected, posing a risk to swimmers. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to these hazardous conditions. If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises relaxing and floating, not swimming against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
Minor coastal flooding is anticipated, with water potentially reaching or pushing into the dunes on South Padre Island. This will make driving on the beach difficult for most vehicles, particularly north of Public Beach Access #3. Large breaking waves of 3 to 5 feet are expected in the surf zone. Minor to moderate beach erosion is also a concern.
If travel is necessary in affected areas, allow extra time for potential road closures. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Property owners in flood-prone areas should take immediate action to protect their belongings.
