Brownsville Honors Medal of Honor Recipient With Park Rename
The Brownsville City Commission approved renaming Veterans Memorial Park to Sergeant Jose M. Lopez Veterans Memorial Park on May 26, honoring the Brownsville native who received the Medal of Honor for his military service. Veterans, community leaders, and residents spoke in support during the meeting.
Commissioners also approved an ordinance creating a Municipal Court of Record, which city officials said will strengthen code enforcement, improve court efficiency, reduce duplicate appeals, and provide greater local control over ordinance enforcement proceedings.
The Commission approved a second ordinance allowing the City Manager's Office to employ more than one deputy city manager to improve oversight and management across major departments and growing service areas.
Commissioners recognized the Spirit League Cheer Team for winning a national championship in Orlando, Florida. The team became the first competitive cheer team from Brownsville to compete nationally and return with a championship title.
The Commission proclaimed June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month and approved funding for the Special Needs Advisory Board to launch scholarship opportunities and expand accessibility and support for individuals with disabilities.
