Dangerous Rip Currents and Coastal Flooding Expected for Kenedy, Willacy, and Cameron Islands
Dangerous rip currents and minor coastal flooding are expected in Kenedy, Willacy, and Cameron Island counties from October 8 at 10:41 PM CDT until October 11 at 7:00 AM CDT, according to the NWS Brownsville TX.
Beachgoers and residents in Kenedy Island, Willacy Island, and Cameron Island counties should be aware of a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Brownsville TX. This alert, effective from October 8 at 10:41 PM CDT until October 11 at 7:00 AM CDT, warns of dangerous rip currents and minor coastal flooding.
The NWS advises that dangerous rip currents are expected, capable of sweeping even strong swimmers away from shore. Minor coastal flooding is also anticipated, with water reaching or pushing into the dunes on South Padre Island. This may make driving on the beach difficult for vehicles without four-wheel drive and high wheel bases, particularly north of Public Beach Access #3. Minor to moderate beach erosion is also expected. The maximum inundation is predicted to occur near high tide cycles each afternoon.
For those in affected areas, if travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
Regarding rip currents, the NWS instructs to swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
