Residents and visitors to Kenedy Island, Willacy Island, and Cameron Island are advised of a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Brownsville, TX. Dangerous rip currents are expected from 7:00 AM CDT this morning, October 4, until 7:00 PM CDT on Monday evening, October 5.

A Coastal Flood Statement is also in effect until 7:00 AM CDT this morning, October 4, with isolated minor coastal flooding anticipated. This may lead to wave run-up approaching dunes on narrow beaches, potential movement of beach equipment, and higher water levels for vehicles on narrow beaches. Elevated water levels could also affect the Laguna Madre, South Bay, and State Highway 4 west of Boca Chica State Park.

The NWS warns that rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Safety is paramount: do not drive through flooded roadways. If you plan to swim, do so near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If you cannot escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
