Beach Hazard: Sneaker Waves Expected on South Central Oregon Coast
A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for the South Central Oregon Coast, including Douglas, Coos, and Curry counties, warning of a moderate risk of dangerous sneaker waves from late Saturday night until Monday afternoon; avoid beaches and jetties.
Residents and visitors along the South Central Oregon Coast, including Douglas, Coos, and Curry counties, are advised to avoid beaches, rocks, and jetties due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Medford. A moderate risk of sneaker waves is expected from late Saturday night, October 10, until Monday afternoon, October 12.
The NWS warns that short period north-northwest wind waves interacting with a building west-northwest long period swell will create dangerous conditions. The risk of sneaker waves will be highest during Sunday morning.
Sneaker waves can surge significantly farther up beaches than usual, including over rocks and jetties, posing a risk of knocking individuals off their feet and sweeping them into the ocean. These powerful waves can also move large logs and other debris, which could cause serious injury or entrapment.
To ensure safety, the NWS instructs everyone to remain out of the water and avoid climbing on rocks and jetties during this period. For detailed hazard area information, visit https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/map/?wfo=mfr.
