Boynton Beach families considering SouthTech Schools can find answers to common questions about admissions, academic programs, and daily schedules. Palm Beach County Charter Schools, which includes SouthTech Academy (grades 9-12) and SouthTech Preparatory (grades 6-8), has detailed key information for prospective families.
Students at SouthTech Schools will take state assessments required for graduation, mirroring those at their assigned boundary schools. The schools also administer the SAT, ACT, PSAT, and ASVAB. Both SouthTech Academy and SouthTech Preparatory require uniforms, with attire determined by the student's chosen career academy at the academy or by grade level at the preparatory school.
Academic schedules differ by campus. SouthTech Academy uses a 4x4 block schedule, with students taking four classes per semester, similar to a college model. Each semester includes at least one 90-minute academy class. SouthTech Preparatory employs a 3x3 alternate-block schedule for middle school students (grades 6-8), who attend three classes daily on alternating days, covering six classes annually.
Opportunities for advanced learning and career preparation exist. SouthTech Academy students can earn college credit through dual enrollment courses at Palm Beach State College and by passing AP Exams, with the potential for an Associate Degree. The Auto Tech Academy allows students to work on their own vehicles under instructor supervision and offers 10 ASE certifications. SouthTech covers the final certification fee for students who pass all 10.
For middle school students, 7th graders in the IT program earn a Web & Software Design Certification. Eighth graders in the same program achieve a programming/Emerging Technology certification. In the Medical Science program at SouthTech Preparatory, students do not earn certifications but receive high school credit upon successful completion.
Transfer credits are accepted for high school students after transcript evaluation. Each new student must submit a separate application, even if a sibling attends SouthTech. The schools accept students with disabilities and/or IEPs. Inquiries can be directed to ESE Coordinators Barbara Bridgett at [email protected] for both campuses.
SouthTech Schools do not have official sports teams but offer intramural programs and sports clubs. Students are encouraged to participate in sports at their designated boundary schools. The SouthTech Academy school day runs from 7:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.; the campus opens at 6:30 a.m. and students must leave by 2:30 p.m. SouthTech Preparatory's school day is from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., with drop-off available from 8:15 a.m. Aftercare is not currently offered.
More information about academies and the application process is available on the SouthTech Schools website.
