Lafayette Police Gets License Plate Reader Grant

Staff Writer
June 12, 2026

The Lafayette Police Department secured grant funding to purchase Automated License Plate Reader technology for patrol vehicles and fixed locations across the city.

ALPR systems photograph license plates and record the location, date, and time of each scan. Investigators search the resulting database while working criminal cases.

Police Chief Rick Dart said the department will use the technology to solve crimes, locate missing persons, and apprehend wanted individuals. The department plans to hold a community meeting to discuss the system and answer resident questions.

The department did not disclose the grant amount or funding source. It said it will operate the technology in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
