Extreme Heat Warning for Death Valley: Act Now to Stay Safe
An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for Death Valley National Park from October 6 to October 9, with dangerously hot temperatures near 110 degrees, posing a significant risk of heat-related illnesses.
Residents and visitors to Death Valley National Park are advised to take immediate precautions as an Extreme Heat Warning has been issued. The National Weather Service (NWS) Las Vegas NV has issued this warning, effective from October 6 at 3:02 PM PDT until October 9 at 8:00 PM PDT.
Dangerously hot conditions are expected, with high temperatures near 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Overnight lows will only drop to approximately 85 degrees Fahrenheit. This severe heat poses a major risk, particularly for individuals without adequate cooling and hydration, and impacts elevations in Death Valley National Park below 2000 feet.
The NWS warns that heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events. To protect yourself and others, drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, and stay out of direct sunlight. Check on relatives and neighbors, especially those who may be vulnerable.
Never leave young children or pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in minutes. When outdoors, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours. Be vigilant for symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and if someone is overcome by heat, move them to a cool, shaded location. Heat stroke is a medical emergency; call 911 immediately.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments for those working outdoors. Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates from the National Weather Service.
