An Extreme Heat Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Las Vegas, NV, for Death Valley National Park, specifically for elevations below 2000 feet. The warning is effective from 11 AM PDT today, October 4, and will remain in effect until 8 PM PDT Friday, October 9.

Dangerously hot conditions are expected, with high temperatures reaching near 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Overnight lows will only drop to approximately 85 degrees Fahrenheit. This severe heat poses a major risk, particularly to individuals without adequate cooling and hydration, and significantly increases the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Residents and visitors in the affected area are urged to take immediate precautions. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, and limit sun exposure. Check on relatives and neighbors, especially those vulnerable to heat. Crucially, never leave young children or pets unattended in vehicles; interior temperatures can become lethal within minutes.

When outdoors, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. Schedule strenuous activities for early morning or evening hours. Be vigilant for symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If someone is overcome by heat, move them to a cool, shaded location immediately. Heat stroke is an emergency – call 911. For outdoor workers, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings from the NWS for updates.
