The National Weather Service (NWS) Las Vegas NV issued this severe alert, predicting dangerously hot conditions with high temperatures reaching approximately 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Overnight lows are expected to remain around 85 degrees Fahrenheit. These conditions pose a major heat risk, particularly for individuals without access to adequate cooling and hydration.
Heat-related illnesses are expected to increase significantly during this period. The NWS recommends the following actions:
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Stay in an air-conditioned room.
- Stay out of the sun.
- Check up on relatives and neighbors.
- Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors will reach lethal temperatures rapidly.
- When outdoors, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.
- Limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours.
- Be aware of symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- For outdoor workers, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration advises frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
- If someone is overcome by heat, move them to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency; call 911 immediately.
