Charleston County Offices Closed for Memorial Day

Charleston County Government will be closed on Monday, May 27, 2024, in observance of Memorial Day. All Charleston County offices, libraries, and courts will be closed. Garbage and trash pickup: Collection will be delayed by one day throughout the week. Charleston County convenience centers: Will be open. Beaches: Beach conditions can be viewed on the Charleston County Parks website or mobile app. Lifeguards will be on duty at Isle of Palms County Park, Kiawah Beachwalker Park, and Folly Beach County Park. Parks: Open, but staffed programs and activities will not take place. Animal Shelter: Closed on Monday, May 27, 2024. Open for adoptions by appointment Tuesday, May 28, 2024. On Saturday, the North Charleston Police Department’s Community Engagement Unit hosted one of our most heartwarming and impactful events of the year—“A Baby Changes Everything” special baby shower.We were honored to welcome new and expectant mothers for a day filled with education, resources, and meaningful support to help them navigate this exciting journey. Attendees participated in workshops and presentations covering important topics such as traveling with a baby, healthy lifestyle choices, postpartum depression, and more.The event also featured free giveaways and prizes, providing essential items for moms and moms-to-be.A special thank you to our incredible partners—Bundle of Joy, New York Life, Zetas of Charleston, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), and I Serve With Joy!—for helping make this event such a tremendous success. 💙

Recruits Participate in Tony Way Challenge Run

This morning, several of our recruits took part in the Tony Way Challenge Run, held in honor of fallen officer Robert Anthony “Tony” Way, who lost his life in the line of duty in February 1985. The run began on Tony Way Boulevard at the North Charleston Coliseum and concluded at the site of Officer Way’s death on Rivers Avenue near Mall Drive. As part of the experience, the recruits—who are preparing to attend the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy—read the incident report from that tragic night. They also paused to observe a moment of silence, paying tribute to Officer Way’s courage, service, and ultimate sacrifice.

North Charleston Named Finalist for 2026 All-America City Award North Charleston, SC – The City of North Charleston has been named one of 20 finalists for the prestigious 2026 All-America City Award, presented by the National Civic League. This national recognition highlights communities that demonstrate excellence in civic engagement, collaboration, and inclusive community-building. For more than 75 years, the All-America City Award has celebrated communities that work together to identify challenges and create meaningful, lasting solutions. This year’s theme, Strengthening Civic Health and Building Trust, reflects North Charleston’s ongoing commitment to fostering strong relationships between residents, local organizations, and city leadership. North Charleston joins a diverse group of finalists from across the country, all recognized for their dedication to ensuring residents have a voice in shaping the future of their communities. “This year’s All-America City finalists remind us that the strength of democracy depends on engaged residents who are invested in shaping the future of the places they call home,” said Doug Linkhart, President of the National Civic League. “These communities are proving that civic health is improved block by block, through trust, belonging, and the collective power of people working together.” Mayor Reggie Burgess praised the recognition as a reflection of the community’s spirit and collaboration.“Being named an All-America City finalist is a testament to the people of North Charleston,” said Mayor Burgess. “Our residents, businesses, nonprofits, and city staff work together every day to build a stronger, more connected community. This recognition belongs to all of them, and we are proud to represent North Charleston on the national stage.” Finalists were selected through a competitive review process that evaluated each community’s shared vision, civic engagement, inclusiveness, collaboration, innovation, and measurable impact. What’s Next North Charleston will travel to Denver, Colorado from June 26–28, 2026, to participate in the All-America City Award Event. Pfc. Estrada Recognized for Life Saving Actions

Please join the North Charleston Police Department in congratulating Pfc. Juan Estrada, recipient of the Life Saving Award for January 2026. On January 1, while patrolling near Rivers Avenue and Hawthorne Drive, Pfc. Estrada came upon a serious collision involving a motorcycle carrying two riders. He immediately notified dispatch and began assessing the situation. Upon locating one of the riders in the roadway with a severe leg injury, he quickly retrieved his tourniquet and applied it to control significant bleeding. While rendering critical aid, Pfc. Estrada maintained clear communication with dispatch, provided updates on the rider’s condition, coordinated with responding EMS personnel, and directed additional officers to secure the scene. His decisive actions, calm demeanor, and quick thinking during a chaotic and traumatic incident quite possibly saved a life.

North Charleston Proclaims April Child Abuse Prevention Month

Every child deserves to be safe. To raise awareness of the dangers our most vulnerable citizens face, Mayor Reggie Burgess has proclaimed April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in North Charleston. In partnership with the Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center, our mission is to prevent abuse, protect children, and heal families. It is never too late to educate yourself and your children on the signs of abuse. Because one more child abused is too many.
