Snowbird Language & Culture - Advanced Linguist Apprentice - Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians EBCI EMERGENCY ALERTS PAY BILL Position title Advanced Linguist Apprentice Description The primary function of an Advanced Linguist Apprentice is to expose advanced learners to several aspects of various language leadership roles while continuing to advance their language proficiency. During the program, the learner will be exposed to advanced linguistics and grammar, interview and translation techniques, teaching methodologies, curriculum development and maintaining a master apprentice relationship with a fluent speaker. Advanced Linguist Apprentice will continue to work cooperatively with all program participants, learners, and administration to develop a deep understanding of Cherokee heritage and culture through the learning of the Cherokee Language. Participants of the program will endeavor to meet program language proficiency expectations by adherence to language policy and procedure as well as full participation in each learning methodology. The program requires strict adherence to meeting goals and objectives outlined for the program. Individuals must be able to work independently and maintain a strong work ethic in all areas of the program. A key feature of the program will be the creation of language content that helps to educate the learner, but also become a resource for educators. Each second language learner will seek to learn, utilize, and teach the language in an effort to perpetuate the Cherokee language. The Advanced Linguist Apprentice positions are limited to one (1) year engagement. To complete the full term of engagement an apprentice must meet quarterly language proficiency assessment expectations as well as EBCI employee evaluations. If the expectations are not met, the apprentice shall be released. Responsibilities Treat all program participants, Cherokee speakers, administration, and all sister program participants and property with respect and assist them in language acquisition and exhibit Cherokee Core Values. Perform the tasks requested as a part of the course curriculum to enhance language acquisition. Shall maintain satisfactory attendance within the program and maintain compliance with all program, Divisional, and Tribal policies & procedures. Meet with an assigned language speaker on a consistent basis, conducting interviews using video and audio formats and transcribing interviews. Attend mandatory language classes on advanced grammar and linguistics. Serve with a teaching mentor several hours a week in a classroom setting. Will shadow, create curriculum and team teach during the mentorship. Maintain a “Language Based Project” that meets the criteria of learning, building curriculum and creating a lesson using multimedia or approved media that can be taught to others. Track training hours and report hours on attendance for provided by the Tribe. Advance the welfare of the Cherokee Language. Actively participate in all community engagements and learning activities. Conform to a casual dress code during normal classroom hours. However, during certain events or occasions, a different dress standard may be necessary. Engage with Cherokee Language Community members during community events, visiting with elders, public speaking events as well as other informal contact opportunities. Must be willing to learn and utilize the Cherokee syllabary. Scope of Supervision This position is supervised by program leadership. This position is not responsible for supervising others. Minimum Mandatory Qualifications Experience: Must be 18 years of age. Education: A high school diploma or GED is required. Must be a graduate of the ᏓᏗᏬᏂᏏ Dadiwonisi or Cherokee Language Master Apprentice Program or have a score of “intermediate-mid” on the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages “ACTFL” standards, which means the candidate can, “state my views and carry on conversations on a variety of familiar topics and in uncomplicated situations”. Licenses & Certifications: Valid, insurable NC Driver’s License required.
