The U.S. men's national soccer team faces a significant challenge Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026, against Mexico in an exhibition match outside Phoenix, Arizona. Despite being a technical home game, an estimated 60,000 fans at State Farm Stadium are expected to support Mexico, creating an inhospitable environment.
Veteran defender Antonee Robinson acknowledged the atmosphere. "It's going to be an adverse crowd, tough conditions to play in," Robinson said. "But that's something we embrace." The match serves as crucial preparation for the upcoming World Cup cycle, especially as the team has not played outside the United States in nearly two years. Automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup meant missing opportunities to play in hostile regional environments, which will be necessary for the 2030 World Cup qualifying tournament starting late next year.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino compared the atmosphere to the 2025 Gold Cup final loss to Mexico. He noted that playing in such a setting would be like starting the game "down 1-nil," but would ultimately "help for the future." The team has seen promising performances from younger players, including goals from teenagers Mathis Albert and Justin Ellis, and two from Julian Hall in earlier matches against Peru and Chile. These young players may feature against Mexico and Canada, bringing a fresh energy.
The rivalry with Mexico is intense, with players describing it as a feeling of "dislike, hate." Tyler Adams, who will inherit the captain's armband from the retired Tim Ream, emphasized the must-win nature of these games. Robinson echoed this sentiment, saying, "It feels like a cup final, and we get a lot of boys who've never experienced that at this level who'll get to see it for the first time." He also noted the team's ability to thrive under pressure, stating, "We love when we score and we're getting beers thrown at us and things like that. It's a great feeling."
Following the match against Mexico, the U.S. team is scheduled to play Canada in St. Paul, Minnesota.
