Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Lower Plaquemines; Prepare Now
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Lower Plaquemines, warning of potential life-threatening storm surge and tropical storm-force winds within the next 48 hours; residents must finalize preparations immediately.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Lower Plaquemines, including Port Sulphur, Empire, and Venice, effective October 7 at 10:12 AM CDT by the National Weather Service (NWS) New Orleans. Life-threatening storm surge and tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours. Residents should immediately finalize preparations to protect life and property.
A Storm Surge Watch indicates the potential for 3-5 feet of life-threatening inundation above ground, primarily outside the levees, from Friday morning until Saturday morning. If evacuation orders are issued for your area, you must leave. Failure to evacuate may result in loss of life. Assemble disaster supplies and know your evacuation route.
Tropical storm-force winds, with peak forecasts of 25-35 mph and gusts to 40 mph, are possible. However, the NWS warns of potential for wind equivalent to a Category 1 or 2 hurricane (74 to 110 mph), which could cause considerable roof damage, extensive tree damage, and widespread power and communication outages. Act now to complete preparations before hazardous winds begin.
Additional rainfall of 1-3 inches, with localized higher amounts, may lead to localized flooding. Heed any flood watches and warnings. The situation is also somewhat favorable for a few isolated tornadoes; if a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly.
This alert expires at 6:15 PM UTC on October 7, 2026. For more information, visit gohsep.la.gov/emergency.
