Tropical Storm Warning for Lower Plaquemines; Evacuate If Ordered
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Lower Plaquemines, including Port Sulphur, Empire, and Venice, with immediate threats of hazardous winds and life-threatening storm surge; residents should prepare now and evacuate if ordered.
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Lower Plaquemines, including Port Sulphur, Empire, and Venice, effective immediately until October 9 at 12:15 AM UTC. The National Weather Service in New Orleans reports a severe and immediate threat.
Residents should plan for hazardous winds of 25-35 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, and potential for higher sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Complete all property protection efforts now. Move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous. Damage to unanchored structures, large tree limbs, and some power outages are possible. Hazardous driving conditions are expected on elevated roadways.
Life-threatening storm surge of 3-5 feet above ground is possible from Friday morning until Saturday morning. If evacuation orders are given for your area, leave immediately to avoid being cut off from emergency services. Significant impacts are expected, including inundation, damage to buildings, and washed-out escape routes. Moderate damage to marinas and small craft breaking away are also anticipated.
Localized flooding from approximately 1 inch of additional rain is possible. Heed any flood watches and warnings. Rivers, tributaries, and small streams may rise quickly, and floodwaters could enter some structures. Tornadoes are not expected at this time.
