Storm Surge Watch Issued for Lower Plaquemines Parish
A severe Storm Surge Watch has been issued for Lower Plaquemines Parish, with life-threatening flooding and hurricane-force winds possible from Friday morning. Residents must prepare immediately and be ready to evacuate if ordered.
Residents in Lower Plaquemines Parish, including Port Sulphur, Empire, and Venice, must prepare immediately for a severe Storm Surge Watch issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) New Orleans. Life-threatening storm surge flooding of 3-5 feet above ground is possible from Friday morning until Saturday morning.
High winds are also anticipated, with peak forecasts of 25-35 mph and gusts up to 40 mph. The NWS warns of the potential for winds equivalent to a Category 1 or 2 hurricane (74 to 110 mph), which could cause extensive damage. Preparations to protect life and property should be rigorously underway, with residents completing all actions before winds become hazardous.
Significant impacts from storm surge include areas of inundation mainly outside levees, damage to buildings near the coast, and potential washing out of escape routes and secondary roads. Evacuation orders, if issued, must be followed to avoid loss of life.
Additional rainfall of 1-3 inches, with localized higher amounts, may lead to localized flooding. There is also a potential for a few tornadoes. Residents should heed flood watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if a tornado warning is issued. For more information, visit gohsep.la.gov/emergency.
