Rip Current Statement Issued for Coastal Areas Through Tuesday Evening

A Rip Current Statement is in effect for coastal Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, McIntosh, Beaufort, Coastal Colleton, Charleston, and Coastal Jasper counties from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening, October 6th, warning of dangerous rip currents and high surf.

Coastal residents and visitors in Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, McIntosh, Beaufort, Coastal Colleton, Charleston, and Coastal Jasper counties should be aware of a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS Charleston SC). Dangerous rip currents are expected from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening, October 6th, until 8:00 PM EDT.

This alert affects all South Carolina and Georgia beaches within the specified coastal areas. Rip currents pose a significant risk, capable of pulling even strong swimmers away from the shore into deeper waters.

In addition to the rip current threat, high surf with breaking waves of 4 to 6 feet is expected along the lower South Carolina coast, and 5 to 7 feet along the Georgia coast. Strong northeast winds, elevated tides, and large breaking waves will contribute to an increased risk of significant beach erosion. A High Surf Advisory may also be issued for Tuesday and Tuesday night.

The NWS advises beachgoers to swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
