Rip Current Statement Issued for Southern Nassau, Southwest Suffolk
A Rip Current Statement, Coastal Flood Warning, and High Surf Advisory are in effect for Southern Nassau and Southwest Suffolk Counties until this evening, with dangerous rip currents, widespread flooding, and large waves expected.
Residents and visitors in Southern Nassau and Southwest Suffolk Counties are advised of a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Upton NY, effective immediately until 8:00 PM EDT tonight, September 27. This statement indicates a High Rip Current Risk, making conditions dangerous for anyone entering the surf zone.
In addition to the rip current risk, a Coastal Flood Warning is in effect until 6:00 PM EDT this evening. Vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline could experience 2 to 2.5 feet of inundation above ground level. A High Surf Advisory is also in place until 8:00 PM EDT, with large breaking waves of 6 to 8 feet expected in the surf zone.
The NWS warns of widespread moderate to locally major coastal flooding, potentially extending inland to areas that typically do not flood. Road closures are likely, and low-lying properties, including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes with basements near the waterfront, are at risk of flooding. Vehicles parked in these areas are likely to be affected.
Shorelines and beaches will experience widespread dune erosion and beach flooding due to elevated water levels and breaking waves. Localized overwashes are possible where dunes are compromised, potentially leading to flooding of roadways and vulnerable structures behind protective dunes. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions are expected.
Take immediate actions to protect flood-prone property. If travel is necessary, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. The NWS strongly advises that anyone visiting the beaches should stay out of the surf today.
