ACTION REQUIRED: Avoid the surf zone and protect flood-prone property in Southeast Suffolk County immediately.
The National Weather Service (NWS) Upton NY has issued a Rip Current Statement, Coastal Flood Warning, and High Surf Advisory for Southeast Suffolk County, effective now. Dangerous rip currents, coastal flooding, and large breaking waves are expected through this evening, September 27th.
A Coastal Flood Warning is in effect until 6:00 PM EDT today, with 2 to 3 feet of inundation above ground level expected in vulnerable areas. This includes the north shore of the south fork, the tidally affected Peconic River, and the north shore of Fire Island. Residents in these areas should anticipate numerous road closures, widespread flooding of low-lying properties, and potential flooding of vehicles parked near the waterfront. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
A High Surf Advisory is also in effect until 8:00 PM EDT tonight, with large breaking waves of 7 to 9 feet in the surf zone. This will lead to widespread dune erosion, beach flooding, and potentially localized overwashes where dune structures are compromised. The Rip Current Statement, effective through this evening, warns of life-threatening rip currents for all individuals entering the surf. Anyone visiting the beaches should stay out of the surf.
