High Surf Warning Issued for South Walton, Coastal Bay Counties
A High Surf Warning is in effect for South Walton and Coastal Bay Counties until Sunday, October 11, at 11:00 AM EDT, with dangerously large breaking waves and life-threatening rip currents expected. Stay out of the water and off jetties.
Residents and visitors in South Walton and Coastal Bay Counties are advised to stay out of the water due to a High Surf Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee, FL. The warning is in effect until Sunday, October 11, at 11:00 AM EDT.
Dangerously large breaking waves of 2 to 14 feet in the surf zone are expected. This creates life-threatening swimming conditions and significant beach erosion. Additionally, a High Rip Current Risk is in effect through late Sunday night, with rip currents capable of sweeping swimmers away from shore.
A Coastal Flood Advisory is also in effect until 11:00 AM CDT today, October 10, for minor coastal flooding. Flooding of lots, parks, and roads is expected, with isolated road closures possible. Travelers are advised to allow extra time and to not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Property owners in flood-prone areas should take necessary protective actions.
Everyone should remain out of the water and stay off jetties, piers, and other waterside infrastructure. If caught in a rip current, relax and float; do not swim against the current. If able, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. These conditions are expected to persist until the stated expiration times.
